Anyone who really knows me knows I find talking about myself almost as enjoyable as a root canal (unless you’re a dentist and then you probably really enjoy root canals?). What I do enjoy talking about is science. So you won’t find a long “about me” section here.  If you need details, contact me or check out my Linked In page. 

Briefly, I received a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry focusing on mass spectrometry at UNC, Chapel Hill.  I learned a ton about mass spectrometry in grad school and, perhaps most importantly, I realized I wasn’t cut out for full-time lab work.  Instead, I realized I wanted to go the mass spec business route. I enjoyed a successful 22-year career in product marketing, product management and sales at Thermo Finnigan (now Thermo), Applied Biosystems (now Sciex), and Agilent. In these roles, I used my in-depth knowledge of mass spectrometry to assist in the development, marketing, and sales of these instruments.

I enjoyed working with amazing internal researchers and external collaborators to learn even more about mass spectrometry and the variety of applications areas these instruments are used in.   Over time, I found one of the most rewarding parts of my job was figuring out how to take all this technically detailed and specific research and “translate” it into a format that was more understandable for scientists who were not always mass spectrometry experts. It took me awhile, but I finally realized what I really enjoyed most was writing content that made an impact.

In 2022 I decided to “retire” from my full-time job at Agilent so I could spend more time with my family and our pets. Additionally, I wanted to have the flexibility to do freelance content writing and pick projects that really excited me.  I established J. Wight, LLC to handle contract writing opportunities.

When I’m not in front of my computer writing, I enjoy spending time with my family, riding horses and bicycling. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 horses and 4 rabbits. And a bunch of fish.
